How to use it

  1. 01

Drop your logo or photo on the box above, or try one of the samples.

  2. 02

Adjust the padding until your mark sits comfortably inside the circle guide.

  3. 03

Pick a background, then download the square. 800 pixels covers every platform.

The size is not the hard part

Search for profile picture dimensions and you will find confident, contradictory answers. One guide says Instagram wants 110 pixels, another says 320, another says 720.

They are all describing different things. Some quote what the platform recommends you upload, some quote what it stores, and some quote the size it displays on one particular screen. The useful fact underneath is that every platform downscales and none of them upscale, so one generous square covers all of them. 800 pixels is the largest figure anyone recommends, so that is the default here.

Which means the number was never the problem. The framing is.

Everything is cropped to a circle

Every major platform crops a profile picture to a circle. Not a rounded square, a circle, which cuts away about 21% of a square image, all of it from the corners.

A logo that fills its frame edge to edge loses all four corners. A horizontal wordmark loses both ends, which usually means losing the first and last letters. The guide in the preview shows you exactly what survives, and the padding control is how you pull the artwork inside it.

Ten to twenty percent padding is the usual answer for a square mark. A wordmark often needs more, or needs to be replaced with just its symbol.

Do not upload a transparent PNG

It seems like the tidy thing to do, and it causes a specific, avoidable problem. A transparent profile picture lands on whatever color that platform puts behind it.

That color is different on every platform, and on most of them it changes between light and dark mode. A dark logo uploaded with transparency looks fine to you and is invisible to anyone browsing at night.

Choosing a background here makes it your decision rather than theirs, and it stays the same everywhere.

Look at it small before anyone else does

The row under the preview shows your picture at roughly the size each platform actually displays it, which is around 50 pixels across.

That is the honest view. A detailed wordmark that looks excellent in the large preview is often an unreadable smudge at avatar size, and it is better to find that out here than in a feed. If it fails, the logo size checker will show you where it starts to come apart.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to what people ask about this conversion.

  • One square at 800 pixels covers every platform. Published figures disagree with each other because some quote the upload recommendation and some quote the display size, but they all downscale and none of them upscale, so a generous square is always safe. The size is the easy part; the framing is what usually goes wrong.
