How to use it

  1. 01

Drop your AVIF files above, click to browse, or paste an image you copied from a site.

  2. 02

Your browser decodes the AVIF and writes a high-quality JPG, all locally.

  3. 03

Download the JPGs individually, or all at once after a batch.

What AVIF is, and why you have one

AVIF is the newest mainstream image format on the web. It is built on AV1, a video codec, and it compresses remarkably well, often producing files half the size of a JPG at the same visual quality.

That efficiency is why sites have adopted it. It is also why you are here, which is that you saved an image, got a .avif, and found your photo viewer, editor, or the form you need to upload to has never heard of it.

This is the same story WebP went through a few years earlier. Browsers adopt new formats quickly because they benefit from the speed. The software on your computer follows years later.

Expect the JPG to be larger

This surprises people, so it is worth saying plainly that your JPG will almost certainly be bigger than the AVIF it came from, sometimes considerably.

Nothing has gone wrong. AVIF is simply a much more efficient format. Storing the same picture as JPG, a design from 1992, takes more space. What you gain is a file that opens everywhere, which is the entire reason for converting.

Transparency and quality

AVIF supports transparency; JPG does not. If your image has a see-through background, those areas will be filled with white in the JPG. For a logo or graphic, convert to PNG instead so the transparency survives.

On quality, we write JPGs at 92%, high enough that the difference is not visible under normal viewing. A single conversion is not what degrades an image, repeatedly editing and re-saving a JPG is.

Converted on your device, not ours

Your browser can already decode AVIF, that is how it displayed the image on the website you saved it from. This tool uses that same built-in capability, so no upload is needed and no server is involved.

Nothing is transmitted, stored or seen by anyone. Disconnect your internet after the page loads and the converter still works, which is the simplest way to confirm it.

Note that one older browser caveat applies, because AVIF decoding depends on your browser, a very old browser may not be able to read the file at all. Any current version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari will.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to what people ask about this conversion.

  • AVIF is a newer image format based on the AV1 video codec. It produces noticeably smaller files than JPG at the same visual quality, so websites have started using it for speed. It is the successor to WebP in the same sense that WebP was a successor to JPG.
